Most of the people marching want to stop giving money to companies that help Israel and the fighting in Gaza.
On Wednesday, people at UCLA were told to leave or they might get arrested. Some of the protesters stayed where they were and kept shouting messages supporting Palestine.
UCLA said that on Thursday and Friday, the campus will have limited activities and all classes will have to be taught online.
The leader of California’s state government said that the police took too long to help when a fight happened at UCLA between a group supporting Israel and a group supporting Palestine. The fight started before the police got there.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s helper said it was not okay for the police to come late and not help very much.
The police took away some people who were supporting Palestine at Columbia University.
State officials and university leaders say security guards quickly went to the protest camp after fighting started on Tuesday night. Some people who saw it happen say the guards took a little while to get there, and there was a short time when no one was helping.
Trump said that campus protests are similar to the riots that happened on January 6th, while Biden is working to stop fighting in Gaza to avoid criticism.
The police just stayed on the edge of the grass and wouldn’t move when we asked for their help, claimed UC Divest at LA, a group that was part of the camp.
The people who were upset about what happened started to go home two hours after it started, and the police took charge on Wednesday, May 1st.
Governor Newsom said that it is not okay to be violent or break the law while expressing your opinions, even though everyone has the right to speak freely.
He said that the people who did something wrong must be punished, either by going to jail, getting in trouble at school, or being kicked out. The police at UCLA left because there weren’t enough of them compared to the crowd.
The newspaper said that more police officers from different places were called to help, and it took three hours to fix the problem.
Columbia University stopped some students from protesting.
A big fight happened at a famous school in the US late at night, right after the police in New York made some students leave a building they were protesting in.
The protests at Columbia about what is happening in Gaza have caused similar demonstrations to happen at other universities in the country.
People are protesting at schools in many states, asking for the schools to stop doing business with Israel and companies involved in the war.
The people in charge of the university said there were a lot of security guards around, but they didn’t want to stop the mostly peaceful protests. One day, a big group of people supporting Israel came to campus wearing black clothes and white masks and tried to break down the barriers.
The people wearing masks hit the campers with sticks and bats, sprayed them with smelly spray, and took down their signs.
People in charge of colleges are feeling more and more pressure to stop protests supporting Palestine because these protests are happening in more and more places across the country.
A group of people who support Palestine took control of the Columbia University campus. The mayor of New York City said that some of the people who were arrested were not from the area.
